Graves, Barbara Sue, age 81 of Mt. Juliet, TN, died April 1, 2024. Barbara was born in Henderson, TX and was the daughter of the late James Paxton Boyd and Frances Strong Boyd. She graduated from Henderson High School in 1961. Attending Pepperdine, Whittier College, and Texas A&M, she completed her BS degree from Stephen F. Austin State College in Nacogdoches, TX in 1964. After teaching for 40 years in California, Texas and Tennessee, Barbara retired from John Overton High School in 2002. After retirement, she taught ESL at the Davidson County Jail 3 nights a week for 6 years. She volunteered with many organizations in the Mt. Juliet area including Del Webb, Victory Baptist Church, and Rutland Elementary School.
She was known at Rutland Elementary as “Grandma Rutland” by the students. The students would bring their books to her where she would listen to them read in her recliner in the hallway. Reading to Grandma Rutland always ended with a smile for both her and the kids.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by the love of her life for 57 1/2 years, husband, Merritt Graves; daughter, Amanda Lee Graves; sister, Janie Young; brothers, Chuck Boyd and Jimmy Boyd; brothers-in-law, Tom Graves and Jerry Young.
She is survived by:
Daughters – Missy (Darren) Elrod and Merri Kay Graves
Granddaughters – Paxton Elrod and Piper Elrod
Sister – Pam (Clovis) Glenn
Sisters-in-law – Kay Graves and Virginia Graves

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. April 7, 2024, at Bond Memorial Chapel with Brother Chuck Groover officiating.

Nichols, Frances Gleaves, age 86, of Lebanon, TN, died April 2, 2024. Fran was born in Nashville, TN and was the daughter of the late, Claude and Delma Gleaves. She was a 1956 graduate of Donelson High School. Upon graduation, Fran earned a BS degree from Memphis State University and the MRE degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. She also completed advanced studies at the University of Alaska. Fran was retired from Federal Civil Service as a GS-9/7. In this position she was the Director of Religious Education for three Army Posts and consultant for two Air Force Bases in Alaska. Frances was also preceded in death by her husband, James R. Nichols and sister, Martha Gleaves.

Roberts, Carol J. Miller, age 83, of Mt. Juliet, TN and formerly of Willimantic, CT died peacefully on March 31, 2024. Carol was born January 6, 1941, in Willimantic, CT and was the daughter of the late, Robert E. Miller and Evangeline J. Hansen. She lived her early life with her grandparents, Raymond H. and Lillian A. Dodd. Carol was a graduate of Windham High School and Hartford Airline Personnel School. She worked for the Mathematics Department of the University of Connecticut in Grants and Contracts, retiring in 2001. Carol was a member of the First United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School for many years at the Old Stone Church in Willimantic, CT. She loved to travel, enjoying the beauty and tranquility of downhill skiing in Vermont and Colorado, and bicycling on Cape Cod. Her active life changed after a stroke in 2001, but she never let her physical impairments hold her back. Carol counted her many blessings and never gave up. She loved being with her grandchildren; their youth made her feel young and happy. In 2009, Carol moved to the Del Webb community in Mt. Juliet, TN where she enjoyed playing Bocce ball, going paddle boating, Bible study, learning Canasta, going on bus trips and traveling with family. Carol was predeceased by her sister, Marilyn J. Easton.

A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 20, 2024 at Providence Church, 2293 S. Rutland Road, Mt. Juliet, TN with Pastor Jacob Armstrong officiating. Visitation will be at the church at 12:00 p.m.
Interment will be in East Cemetery in Tolland, CT at a later time.

Drennon, Gary Ragsdale “Rooster”, age 81, of Old Hickory, TN, died April 7, 2024. Gary was born in Nashville, TN and was the son of the late, Ragsdale Drennon and Mary Frances Williams Drennon. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Gary was a member of American Legion Post #88 and former Post Commander of American Legion Post #82. He was also past State Commander of the American Legion for the State of Tennessee, 2009-2014 Chairman of the Nashville-Davidson County Coordinating Council and Coordinator for the Music City Honor Flight. Gary was a member of Goodlettsville Masonic Lodge #271 F&AM. He was also a member of Al Menah Shrine and past Captain of the Drum and Bugle Corp. In addition to his parents, Gary is also preceded in death by his brother, William Lynn “Slim” Drennon, nephew, Terry Drennon and daughter-in-law, Andrea Drennon.

Weist, Harold Wayne, age 88, of Mt. Juliet, TN, died April 7, 2024. Harold was born in Findlay, OH and was the son of the late Paul and Helen Weist. He retired from the United States Marine Corps. after 30 years of service. After his retirement, he proudly served as a district commander for the VFW and as a commander for the Vietnam Veterans Association. He was also a self-published author, writing and publishing 4 books. Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Judy Weist, grandson, Corey Tonge, and brother Paul Weist, Jr.

Chambers, Tony Edward, age 70, of Mt. Juliet, TN peacefully entered into eternal rest on April 19, 2024. Tony was born in Nashville, TN and was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Polly McPherson and brother-in-law, Michael Bullard. He was a dispatcher for Jones Brothers and retired after 18 years of service. Always the practical joker, and known to relentlessly pick on his younger sisters, Tony was also a snake wrangler and a dog whisperer. He had an uncanny ability to communicate with dogs. Tony was a dedicated Chicago Bears fan. He loved baseball and loved watching his grandchildren thrive in their pursuits whether it be baseball, basketball, cheerleading or singing. Tony was a man of God who was always willing to lend a helping hand or a comforting shoulder and will be immensely missed by all that loved him.

Swindoll, Roy Lamar, age 88, of Mt. Juliet, TN died April 24, 2024. Lamar was born on October 4, 1935 in Tupelo, MS and was the son of the late, Presley and Lola Duncan Swindoll. He was also preceded in death by 2 sisters and 4 brothers. Lamar was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Mt. Juliet. He spent his career as a salesman and instructor in the welding industry, retiring from Nasco 25 years ago. Lamar enjoyed people. He and his wife, Virginia, met some of their dearest friends at church, through work, and while square dancing. After retirement they and their friends purchased RVs and traveled across the states strengthening their bonds of friendship. Lamar also took great pleasure in music and in writing and reciting poetry. Seldom could he be found without a harmonica in his pocket. He used these passions and along with his close friends, spent many years entertaining and ministering to residents at local nursing homes. Before having their fist child, he and Virginia adopted Virginia’s six younger siblings after their parents were tragically killed in a car accident. He loved them as his own because Lamar loved his family. He taught his children and grandchildren the importance of working hard, enjoying simple pleasures like woodworking, gardening, and passing on the art of making others smile.

KATIE WAS BORN IN NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE, ON MARCH 25, 1988 TO EVELYN JONES. SHE WAS ADOPTED (CHOSEN) AT 6 WEEKS OLD ON MAY 11, 1988, BY JIM AND VICKI HOOD. KATIE WAS RAISED IN OLD HICKORY, TENNESSEE. SHE PASSED AWAY ON APRIL 9, 2024 AT THE AGE OF 36 AFTER COMPLICATIONS OF PNEUMONIA IN FLORIDA.
SHE ATTENDED W.A. WRIGHT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, MT. JULIET MIDDLE SCHOOL AND MT. JULIET HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATING IN THE CLASS OF 2006. SHE ATTENDED VARIOUS MEDICAL SCHOOLS INCLUDING MEDICAL ASSISTANT SCHOOL AND RECEIVED HER MEDICAL CODING CERTIFICATE.
SHE WAS A CHARTER MEMBER OF VICTORY BAPTIST CHURCH IN MT. JULIET TENNESSEE AND WAS THE FIRST TO BE BAPTIZED IN THE CHURCH AT AGE 12. SHE SANG SOLOS IN HER SCHOOL CHOIR AND WAS ALSO THE ONLY YOUTH WHO SANG IN THE VICTORY BAPTIST CHURCH ADULT CHOIR. SHE LOVED TO PERFORM FOR US AT HOME SINGING KARAOKE.
SHE WAS A GIFTED ARTIST, AND HAD A TALENT FOR BAKING AND CREATING DECORATIVE CAKES AND CUPCAKES. SHE LOVED TO COOK USING HER NANA’S FAVORITE RECIPES.
SHE HAD A LOVING SPIRIT FOR OTHERS AND WANTED TO HELP THOSE STRUGGLING, BECAUSE SHE HAD STRUGGLED MANY YEARS IN HER OWN PERSONAL LIFE. BUT MOST OF ALL SHE LOVED JESUS AND TAUGHT SUNDAY SCHOOL AND HER CHILDREN IN HER CLASS LOVED HER.
