Listen to Obituary

Richard Dean Bonhama, affectionately known as Rick, was born on November 26, 1962, in East Chicago, Indiana. He passed away on September 12, 2025, leaving behind a rich legacy that resonates with music, family, and cherished friendships.

Rick was a skilled welder and pipe fitter, dedicating his working life to his craft and earning respect in his profession. Beyond his work, he was passionate about music! His love for music was evident during his time as a drummer in the band Hassle in the early 2000s. The passion he had for music was matched only by his enthusiasm for sports; he was a devoted fan of the Chicago Bears and the Chicago Cubs, as well as the Titans, and enjoyed watching football and baseball games.

Rick's family was his greatest treasure. He is survived by his beloved children, Britany K. Bonhama, along with her partner Shaun Hooper, and Brian Bonhama. He cherished his role as a grandfather to Cabrin and Carson Bonhama, who brought him immense joy. Additionally, he is remembered fondly by his sister, Deanna Bonhama Smith, and his nephews, Darryl Bonhama, Robert Smith, Jonathan Smith, and Ziggie Dross III.

His friend and loving caregiver for 17 years, Gayla Sasser, was a constant support in Rick's life, and her presence was a testament to the deep bonds he formed throughout his life.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents, Marlene P. Bonhama and Lucio David Bonhama, as well as his brother David Bonhama, his daughter Christina Bonhama Childress, and his nephew Eugene Bonhama. He leaves behind a warm and impactful memory in the hearts of all who knew him—a man who loved deeply and lived passionately.

There will be a memorial service in honor of Rick at a later date.
