John Keith Marcus

October 17, 1955 — July 27, 2025

Mt Juliet

John Keith Marcus, known as JohnBoy by the music community, was born on October 17, 1955, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He spent his early childhood here before his family moved to Minnesota, then on to sunny Miami, Florida, where he discovered his passion for music—a calling that would resonate throughout his entire life. Eventually his close friends convinced him to come to Nashville, where his professional career took off.

On July 27, 2025, JohnBoy passed peacefully, leaving behind a rich legacy of melodies and cherished memories. A devoted musician at heart, he played the bass for several high-profile bands and solo artists of all genres over the years, allowing him to travel the world, playing in everything from packed arenas to local clubs. He even played with a band on the roof of the World Trade Center… the only band ever to do so. Music was not merely a hobby for JohnBoy; it was a lifelong passion and pride that defined him.

The respect he earned from the musical community for his skill and adaptability runs deep, as the tributes pour in:

“I always felt better just being around him. He was so positive and full of love. He is the BEST bass player I have ever had the privilege of sharing the stage with. John would always say after we walked off stage, ‘Joel, that went by too quick.’ I said John, it always does when we’re lost in the moment.” Joel Stevenett

“He is a legend. He played with so much talent and finesse, but the thing that made him different was the pure joy that exuded from him with every note played. His smile was permanent. His laugh was infectious. His story-telling was masterful. A more kind, humble, optimistic and good soul would be hard to find. Due West

“His bass groove was deep and wide. Mister pocket!” Dave Algerholm

“John was a consummate professional, always smiling and always making those around him feel special. He loved our band and we loved having him. The first time we all played together at a club in Antioch it was obvious that this thing was firing on all cylinders again. That unit would log many stage hours in the following years, having more fun than should be allowed.” Al Green of Piper and the Hard Times

With a magnetic personality and bright sense of humor, JohnBoy truly never met a stranger. He seemed to have an instant connection with everybody he met. It would be hard to count the number of people who consider him their BEST FRIEND!

JohnBoy is survived by his loving wife of 22 years, Vicki Marcus, who was a steadfast companion and supporter of his musical journey, and a devoted caretaker. He also leaves behind his brother, William Henry Marcus III (“Bill”), his wife, Karen, and their daughter Joanna. JohnBoy cherished his cousins, including Gail Silkstone (Bill), Marsha Lehr (Ken), and Katherine Fanelli, all of whom he loved dearly.

He will be deeply missed by his family, his many friends across the globe, and anyone who had the pleasure of hearing him play or sharing in a conversation with him. JohnBoy's creative spirit will continue to resonate within the hearts of all he touched.

A visitation to celebrate his life will take place on August 1, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Bond Memorial Chapel, located in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee.
