James Michael Cull Sr., affectionately known as Mike, was born on October 27, 1937, in Birmingham, Alabama. He departed this world on September 11, 2025, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be cherished by those who were fortunate to know him.
Mike was a man of many talents and a personality that could light up any room. His quick wit and infectious humor made him a memorable presence in the lives of friends and family alike. Never one to meet a stranger, he had an extraordinary ability to make connections with those around him, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he encountered. Mike possessed a remarkable “do it yourself” attitude, coupled with a knack for fixing anything that came his way, making him not just handy but a man of resourcefulness and creativity.
A dedicated serviceman, Mike proudly served in the Marine Corps, exemplifying the values of honor and duty throughout his life. His love for fitness began in his younger years, where he was a spirited runner who participated in numerous 5Ks, remaining active even through the years, including keeping up with his membership at the YMCA. His passion for sports extended to golf, basketball, and shooting pool, where he would often showcase his skills.
Nature held a special place in Mike's heart; he treasured the wildlife that visited his yard, feeding birds and watching the neighborhood deer with enthusiasm. His love for family was evident in every gathering, especially during grilling out sessions where laughter and joy filled the air.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Diane Cull, who stood by his side through thick and thin. Mike is survived by his brothers, David Theodore "Teddy" Cull (Mary Frances) and Joseph "Joe" Patrick Cull (Mary), and his cherished children: daughters Karen Cantor (Scott) and Chrissy Horner, along with his son, James M. Cull Jr. He found immense joy in being a grandfather, and his grandchildren, Jennifer (Stephen) and Jonathan, brought him immeasurable happiness. His extended family also includes several nieces and nephews, who will carry his memory forward.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl Cornelius Cull Sr. and Florence Hitt Cull, along with his brother, Earl Cornelius Cull Jr. Their memories, coupled with the joy and kindness Mike spread throughout his life, will remain a guiding light for all who loved him.
Though we mourn the loss of James Michael Cull Sr., we celebrate the vibrant life he lived, the love he shared, and the laughter that will echo in our hearts forever.
In memory of Mike, the family will hold a graveside service with military honors, and he will be inurned at Nashville National Cemetery at a later date. Further details will be provided. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice.
