Dermid, Hildreth Jo Crowder , affectionately known to many as “Mama Jo”, passed away on September 7, 2022. She was a radiant light that shined as bright as any. Her personality and infectious smile could bring happiness and joy to any room. Her demeanor and grace changed not only the rooms she walked into, but the many lives she touched as well. Jo has been a devoted wife and doting mother, as well as grandmother and a friend to all that met her.
Jo is survived by her husband of 58 years, Joel A. Dermid, Jr of Mount Juliet, TN, daughters Beth (Tom) Harmon of Mount Juliet, TN, Amanda (Ray) Robinson of Mount Juliet, TN; Grandchildren, Darian (Rachel) Robinson, Thomas Harmon, William Harmon and Langston Robinson.
Born in Raleigh, NC in 1942, Jo lived in North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland Illinois, Michigan and eventually “retired” to Tennessee. She was a true Carolinian that carried her Southern Belle charm and grace into every place she called home. She is a graduate of Needham Broughton High School Raleigh, NC, class of 1960. She went on to graduate from Meredith College, Raleigh, NC, Class of 1964.
Jo was the definition of a pioneer in the Hospitality industry. She was the industry standard in client services and a pillar to many that followed in her vast footsteps. From working in five-star hotels, to taking multiple rental companies to unforeseen heights, all the way to owning a national linen rental company with her family; she became a paramount figure for all to behold.
With a true servant’s heart, she always led by example. Her strong faith and love for many was the greatest gift anyone could ask for. “Mama Jo” may have only birthed two daughters, but whether it was one of her many industry peers, the countless young men of the Citadel campus or friends of her grandchildren; she was and will always be a north star for many to follow.
