Greene Lavonne Callaway, 83, passed away on September 29, 2024. Lavonne led a very active lifestyle. In her social community she was known as a fierce competitor (some might even say a "card shark") and she taught countless friends how to play Canasta, Super Samba, and Chickenfoot Dominoes. She hosted many of these events at her home and her legacy will continue with the numerous friends and families now playing these same games. In addition, Lavonne also hosted many large Christmas parties for family and friends at her Mount Juliet home over the years. She inspired many people to stay active, regardless of age, when she attended consistent Zumba exercise classes. She was a graceful dancer and met many new friends in her country western and square-dancing classes. In addition, she enjoyed attending church services, spending time with family, watching basketball games and movies, traveling to the beach, gardening, and spending time with her two cats, Angel and Pepper.
Lavonne spent her early years growing up in West Palm Beach, Florida, where she attended Palm Beach Lakes High School. She worked for decades as a Registered Nurse in the operating room. After retiring from Veterans Hospital, she continued working for many years at Southern Hills operating room as well as Northridge Surgery Center. More recently she was known as a great local resource to help friends with basic healthcare needs such as filling medications and providing companionship. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the dedicated and compassionate healthcare professionals at Summit Hospital for their work in recent days.
Lavonne is preceded in death by her parents, Virgil and Louvenie Callaway; brother Hugh Callaway, brother Gene (Joan) Callaway, sister Shirley (John) Timmons. Payne, James Parker “Jim”, of Mt, Juliet, TN, lovingly known as Jim or Pop, passed away peacefully surrounded by his devoted family after a valiant five-year battle with cancer. He faced his illness with courage, grace, and a constant spirit of encouragement for those around him. Born on October 11, 1934, in Decherd, TN, to Lindsey and Jennie Ann (Duncan) Payne, Jim’s family relocated to Akron, OH, during the Great Depression in search of work. He remained in Akron through his youth, growing into a man who would leave a lasting impact on all who knew him. Jim served his country with honor in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959. He was immensely proud of his service, particularly his involvement in the early missile program at White Sands, NM, a contribution that spoke to his patriotism and dedication. In 1966, through family friends, Jim met Pauline Lois (Cawthron), the love of his life. They were married on August 6 of that year at the Cathedral of Tomorrow, with their close friend, Rex Humbard, officiating. Together, they built a life full of love, faith, and adventure. Jim had a long and successful career in pharmaceutical sales with Savage Laboratories, where he earned the affectionate nickname “the Cowboy.” In 1976, Savage Laboratories gave Jim and Pauline the chance to return to Tennessee, a dream they had long held. Settling in Hermitage with their young family, Jim excelled in his work, winning numerous awards and the company’s prestigious Presidential Award. This allowed Jim and Pauline to travel the world, a passion they cherished. After his retirement, Jim and Pauline continued their love of adventure, traveling to all 50 states in their fifth wheel, collecting memories and friendships across the country. A lover of Southern Gospel music, Jim attended countless concerts and gospel singings, where his laughter and enthusiasm were contagious. Above all, Jim was a man of deep faith and love for his family. His most cherished roles were husband, father, and grandfather. He instilled in his children and five grandsons the importance of faith in Jesus Christ and dedication to their country. His love for others and his unfailing kindness made him a friend to everyone he met. He was an active member of Victory Baptist Church in Mt. Juliet, where he sang in the choir and participated in Sunday school until a month before his passing. A proud 57-year Mason, Jim was also an active member of Mt. Juliet Lodge 642. He was also an enthusiastic volunteer at the Miss Tennessee USA, Miss Georgia USA and Miss Mississippi USA pageants for the past 32 years.
In the past year, Jim moved to Rutland Place Senior Living, where he became an integral part of the community, joyfully singing with the Joy Singers and participating in various activities. His infectious smile, warm laughter, and kind spirit filled every room he entered. Just weeks before his passing, Jim’s family and friends celebrated his 90th birthday early, gathering a crowd of people whose lives he had touched. His presence will be deeply missed, but the stories, wisdom, humor, and joy he brought into the world will continue to live on through his family and friends. We take comfort in knowing that he is resting in the arms of his Lord and Savior. A life well lived and loved, Jim will forever be remembered for his kindness, faith, and deep love for his family and friends. His legacy is one of honor, laughter, and unwavering love.
Jim is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Lee Greenwood, son and daughter-in-law, Andrew and Keela Payne; and his five beloved grandsons, Dalton (Sarah) Greenwood, Parker Greenwood, Aiden Payne, Brenden Payne, and Cian Payne. He is preceded in death by his wife, Pauline “Honey” Payne; infant son, Randall James; and his younger brother, Chuck Payne.
Funeral service will be conducted 3 p.m., Thursday, October 3, 2024 at Victory Baptist Church, 1777 Tate Lane, Mt. Juliet, TN with Rev. Chuck Groover officiating. McGuffey, Bettie Bell Rountree was born October 24, 1943, in Florence, Alabama to Thomas Leslie Rountree and Lois Pruitt Rountree. She passed away September 26, 2024. Bettie lived her early life in Muscle Shoals, Alabama and graduated from Sheffield Alabama high school. Upon moving to Tennessee, she and her family settled in southeast Nashville where she developed many wonderful relationships in Edge-O-Lake and Priest Lake Park subdivisions. She greatly cherished those friendships.
She worked many years as an executive assistant for the president of Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee. She was a member of Hermitage Hills Baptist Church. She loved her children so much and was over the moon for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was such a helper and volunteered for countless events.
Her favorite vacations were to Walt Disney World, The Smoky Mountains, and various beaches. She enjoyed so many of those vacations. Her favorite phrases which she stated most every day were “good, good, good !!!” and “the funnest kind of fun!!!.” She stressed the most important words in family birthday cards by underlining the most important words with one, two, three or four lines. This started a competition among the grand kids to see who got the most lines to determine who was Gran’s favorite!!!
Special love and thanks goes out to the several girls clubs she was in, ”The Golden Girls,” “The Birthday Girls,” “The Hermitage Hills Baptist Friends,” and her “Goodwill Friends.” The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff at Maristone of Providence.
Bettie accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior at an early age and in detailed notes she left behind she quoted “this life is just a passageway to eternal life with The Lord” and “I look forward to us all being together again for Eternity.”

Elsie Marie Jefferson Parker (Elsie J. Parker) left this world on Friday August 16, 2024, after a long battle with Dementia and a final short battle with Brain Cancer. She was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend. She cared for her husband and then her mother who were sick and preceded her in death. Before Dementia took her independence in early 2013, she lived life to the fullest, working a full-time job in her younger years and then traveling and enjoying her family in later years before devoting her life to caring for her late father who suffered from Dementia before she did. She was a force to be reckoned with and her verve for life was immense. She embraced it fiercely. She always took the opportunity to help people who were not as fortunate as she was, and she would have given the clothes off her back to someone in need if she thought it would help them. She loved animals immensely and often said that she preferred them over some people. She loved her only child as much as any human can love another and then some. She was strong as an oak and as stubborn as a mule and had an engaging sense of humor and sly wit. She entertained people with her uncensored personality and honesty, basically having “no filter” in her verbal delivery, which endeared her to everyone. It was indeed “her way or the highway,” which her family fondly remarked about her.
Born May 24, 1937, in Pitt County, North Carolina, Mrs. Parker lived in Washington, North Carolina before moving to Mt Juliet, Tennessee in 2004 to be close to her daughter and son-in-law.
She is survived by her only child Vanessa Parker-Davis (Dr. Peter Davis) and her brother Linwood B. Jefferson (wife - Thelma Jefferson) and was preceded in death by her husband Jack C. Parker, Jr., (mother) Bertha H. Jefferson, (father) Millard Allen Jefferson and (sister) Barbara J. Alligood (husband - James Alligood, also deceased).
A celebration of life will be held on September 24, 2024, at 3:00pm CT at Bethel Church of the Nazarene, 455 Broadmoor Drive, Nashville, Tennessee 37216.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to https://truerescue.org/ (cat rescue) and https://ofsds.org/ (senior dog rescue) both in Mt Juliet, Tennessee, in honor of Mrs. Parker’s love of animals.
