Fontelle Moore Sutherland, a retired businesswoman and avid sports fan, died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2015, from complications following a fall in her apartment on Oct. 4. She was 94.

Mrs. Sutherland was born Dec. 6, 1920, on the second floor above the telephone office in Mooringsport, La. Her parents, Hoover and Stella Duckett Moore, moved her across several southern states in her youth in conjunction with her father's career as a manager with Southern Bell Telephone Co. She attended Stetson University until her father was transferred to Nashville, where she enrolled at Ward-Belmont College. She met her future husband, Ernest F. Sutherland, in the “Amen Corner” at Vanderbilt University's Old Gym, the spot where the best dancers in the house paired off to the big-band sounds of the '30s.

They married in 1940 and lived on Due West Avenue in Madison until 1951, when they sold the house they had built, using the proceeds to buy the Mt. Juliet Telephone Co. and its 143 telephones. The company’s lines had been devastated by the blizzard of 1951. While Ernest rebuilt the outside plant, Fontelle operated the switchboard in their living room and kept the books. The business grew as Mt. Juliet grew, and the company converted to dial in 1962. In 1966, the Sutherlands sold the business to Tennessee Telephone Company. Later, when she went to work in the office of the county election commission, Fontelle's knowledge of West Wilson County proved invaluable.

Fontelle Sutherland's legendary love of sports began in the 1930s, when she began attending Vanderbilt football games with her father.  She and Ernest continued attendance at the Vandy games until his death in 1988, after which her sons joined her in the stadium until her recent accident. In her 90s, she traveled to Vanderbilt’s bowl games in Memphis and Birmingham.  She became a season ticket holder for the Vanderbilt basketball games in the 1960s and for the Tennessee Titans games when the team arrived in 1998. She was told she was the oldest active fan attending game for both the Commodores and the Titans. She was also an avid fan of baseball and the Atlanta Braves, whose players and statistics she could quote until this year.

Fontelle was a water skier, taking to the lake each summer until she was 77 when, to her consternation, her son announced he would no longer pull her behind his boat because of her age. She was an accomplished bridge player, and she loved to travel, especially as a part of Mt. Juliet's Needmore Travel Group. Her hobbies included monumental knitting projects and, in later years, stained-glass work, the latter winning her numerous blue ribbons at the Wilson County Fair. She was active in Eastern Star for more than 75 years -- the oldest active member in Tennessee at the time of her death -- and belonged to Victory Baptist Church in Mt. Juliet.

Fontelle Sutherland was known for making a decision and then “getting it done.” Whether in business or personal life, her approach was determined and practical. A few days after her accident, when it was obvious that recovery was unlikely, she declared to her five children that it was “time to go” and said her good-byes. She died peacefully at Alive Hospice in Nashville and will be buried in private graveside services.

Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn Sutherland (Bob Callis), Lebanon, and Cheryl Richardson (W. E. Richardson), Mt. Juliet; three sons, Frank Sutherland (Natilee Duning), Brentwood, Hoover Sutherland (Laura Sutherland), Mt. Juliet, and Glenn Sutherland (Tammy Sutherland), Hermitage; five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Contributions may be made to the Vanderbilt Athletic Department, Habitat for Humanity, Alive Hospice, or the charity of your choice.
